Art, Science
and the invible connections of life
Between 2024 and 2026, I participated in OceanArt: Science to Art, an interdisciplinary initiative bringing together artists and marine scientists to explore new ways of communicating ocean research through contemporary art.
Developed in collaboration with marine scientists Dra. Alexandra Teodósio, Dra. Teresa Borges, Dr. Ana Marçalo, my work investigated the ecological significance of plankton and its relationship to the blue whale.
Through a series of three plankton sculptures and a family of three blue whales sculpture, I sought to reveal a fundamental truth of the natural world: that life exists through intricate networks of interdependence, where the smallest organisms sustain the largest forms of life.
The project became a meditation on interconnectedness. Rather than viewing humanity as standing above nature, the work invites us to recognise ourselves as an integral part of a living ecosystem whose balance depends upon relationships that often remain invisible.
The initiative was presented across three exhibitions in Portugal:
- University of Algarve (UAlg), Gambelas Campus, Faro
6 December 2024 – 17 January 2025
- Forte de Santo António de Beliche, Sagres
17 May – 15 June 2025
- Vila Nova de Milfontes
13–22 May 2026, within the framework of the 4th Festival das Florestas Marinhas.
The exhibitions were associated with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and were supported by the University of Algarve (UAlg) and CCMAR – Centre of Marine Sciences.
For the third exhibition, I also joined the curatorial team alongside Dr. Teresa Borges, contributing to the development and presentation of the exhibition as a dialogue between artistic practice and scientific knowledge.
For me, OceanArt: Science to Art represents more than a collaboration between disciplines. It embodies a way of working in which art becomes a bridge—transforming scientific understanding into an emotional and visual experience that encourages reflection on our place within the living world.
